American Generosity

Philanthropic Giving

September 19, 2024

While some may think of Washington, D.C. as a divisive place, there is plenty there that unites us as Americans, from historical and cultural sites to memorials and museums like the Smithsonian National Museum of American History.  On my most recent trip, I visited the permanent exhibit on Giving in America. It’s easy to miss the small display tucked away on the third floor of the busy, tourist-filled building. The exhibit invites guests to contemplate who, why, what, and how we give our time, talent and treasure as Americans.  While philanthropy is of course not unique to the United States, the exhibit asserts that the “ideals of participation, equality, resourcefulness and shared responsibility have shaped a distinctive form of giving in America.”  Items on display range from alms boxes to a plastic bucket used in the viral 2014 online “ALS Ice Bucket Challenge” as well as many other iconic objects associated with charitable giving. Photos from Earth Day cleanups, Salvation Army kettle drives, Habitat for Humanity builds and animal rescue initiatives, among many others, punctuate a narrative on the immense diversity of giving in America.

Giving Today

While historic artifacts tell many interesting stories about our giving traditions, the annual Giving USA report provides data and insight into contemporary practices. This year’s recently released data reflects enormous generosity: in total, $557.16B was donated by Americans in 2023.

As for what Americans prioritize, these were the top three charitable destinations:

  • Religion – 24% (of total contributions)
  • Human Services – 14%
  • Education – 14%

This one-page graphic provides a more robust summary of where the generosity came from, and where the charitable dollars went, and how that $557.16B is actually less than last year’s total when adjusted for inflation.
